In the past decade, the ideas of racism as “structural,” “institutional,” and “systemic” have become increasingly influential in scholarship, activism and policy, including in the EU. These theories were developed mainly in the United States, often with anti-Black racism in the US as their reference point. This workshop asks what happens when they are used to understand racism in other contexts.

Scholars from across Europe and beyond will discuss:

  • how anti-racist movements have developed, including in the face of a growing radical right
  • how ideas of structural racism shape institutions and policies against discrimination

Would you like to attend? Places are limited. Please email Dr. Marcel Maussen at m.j.m.maussen@uva.nl, and indicate whether you’d like to attend the whole workshop or only one of the panels.

The workshop is organised by the IMISCOE Standing Committee RACED, the Amsterdam Centre for Migration Research (ARC-M), and the Programme Group Challenges to Democratic Representation (AISSR, University of Amsterdam).
